The IRE tour stopped in at Union Hall on Thursday night to throw down and kick you in the feelings. You know... I've been to my fair share of concerts, and each one is relatively the same in most ways; Awesome crowd, rippin' band, the whole works. But last night's show was a whole new ball game. Not really knowing what to expect, I went into this one blind, and my goodness, my eyes have been opened to the awesomeness of Parkway Drive, and how passionate their fans are.
It always warms my heart to see a bands audience get so into the music, which seemed to maintain a steady pace throughout the night. With hardcore openers In Hearts Wake warming up the crowd, Thy Art Is Murder's pleasantly devilish death metal, and Miss May I's menacing metalcore goodness, setting the mood while assisting in the warming up of headbanging necks, and preparing concert-goers minds for what was in store.
As soon as Parkway Drive hit the hazy, and dimly lit stage, Union Hall erupted into a frenzy of worm-rolling crowd surfers, and aggressive moshing that seemed to have the whole room spinning in a whirlwind-kamikaze of bodies and hair. Strobe lights would fire, CO2 cannons would blast into the air, the audience would roar and the whole room would be adrenalized by the very essence of Parkway's performance, as they inebriated their audience with the power of music. People could be seen headbanging, jumping, pumping fists and singing their hearts out all around both levels of the building, which really made me one happy gal.
Despite having trouble to find words to further describe last night's chaos, I cannot help but feel inspired by the uplifting atmosphere that I was involved in, just by simply being in the room. This really was one of my most favorite shows that I have ever had the opportunity to photograph, and I know for a fact, that I myself, won't be forgetting this epic experience any time soon, and I'm willing to bet that there are other people out there who have experienced performances such as this, that feel the exact same way. Huzzah to the passion and power of music and how it brings people together. It's gigs like this that truly makes me love what I do.
Barenaked Ladies and Alan Doyle Serenade Sold Out Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - November 3, 2015
PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE
Fellow Canadian's, and the one and only Barenaked Ladies serenaded their sold out audience at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday night in Edmonton. People of all ages attended the concert, and smiles could be seen on just about every face in the room.
Opening up the show on Tuesday night, also fellow Canadians, was Newfoundland's Alan Doyle & the Beautiful Gypsies. Playing classic Newfoundland tunes and songs from Alan Doyle's former group, Great Big Sea, Alan and his band of beautiful gypsies had the audience clapping and singing along to every song; all the while exchanging smiles and sharing laughter with their crowd.
The Barenaked Ladies took to the stage to play a stellar 21 song set, featuring fan favorites of old and new, as well as a few covers that had their audience singing at the tops of their lungs. Displaying images of classic arcade pinball games on their LCD screens, the crowd began chanting for the band. As the Ladies filed on stage, the audiences roars progressively grew louder and louder, shaking up the butterflies in my stomach and making me that much more excited to photograph these Canadian musical legends. As the Barenaked Ladies rolled on through their set, the crowd was up on their feet, dancing and singing the night away. Abundant with smiles, laughter and all around positive energy, The Barenaked Ladies brought one of the best shows of 2015 to the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, that won't soon be forgotten!
GWAR Shows Union Hall a Bloody Good Time - October 14, 2015
PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE
Shock-rock sensations, GWAR, annihilated Edmonton on Wednesday night with a whole new stage show full of gore, giggles and everything in between. Accompanied by the likes of Detroit's own thrash-masters, Battlecross, and fellow Canadian's from Montreal, Cryptopsy, this gig was off the hook!
I have anticipated going to a GWAR show for some time now. The rumors of fake blood and other bodily fluids being sprayed on the crowd, mixed with various stage characters in impressive costumes sparked my interest for not only seeing what they're all about, but catching them doing their thing in front of my lens as well.
Though proving to be entertaining, it's hard to put into words what a GWAR show is like. It's something that you need to experience first hand in order to understand what exactly is going on. Between getting totally drenched by blood and other liquids, and seeing the crowds reaction to the madness on stage, GWAR put on a stellar performance that not only I, but everyone at Union Hall on Wednesday night wont soon forget!

AC/DC Brings High Voltage Performance to Edmonton - September 20, 2015
PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE
Hordes of people flocked to Commonwealth Stadium on a very rainy Sunday night to catch the notorious rock 'n rollers, A.K.A the infamous thunder from down under, AC/DC, as they bashed their way into Edmonton, Alberta on the Rock Or Bust tour. Despite the foul weather, Edmonton's die-hard AC/DC fans of all ages were not phased, as thousands of people could be seen bundled up in rain ponchos with umbrellas in hand and smiles on their faces.
Upon entering the arena, the butterflies in my stomach began to go nuts. This was my first time shooting a show of this magnitude, and I felt like I was in some sort of perfect dream. This was a huge deal for me! Not only seeing, but photographing AC/DC has been on my must-see/shoot bucket-list for years, and finally getting to cross them off of the mile-long list feels pretty surreal.
Kicking off their explosive performance with the title track off of their newest album, Rock or Bust, AC/DC electrified Commonwealth Stadium with a hefty 20 song set, packed with tracks spanning across their incredible 42 year career. Fans could be heard singing along to their favorite songs from blocks away, as the fireworks and cannons of the stage show could equally be seen. With every note that would burst from the amps, the audience would respond with a roar, cheering and singing along to their favorite parts of their favorite AC/DC songs.
Being surrounded by such and overwhelming abundance of positive energy of this degree was amazing, to say the least. The rain couldn't dampen the mood in Commonwealth Stadium, even if it was pouring buckets. All the while, seeing rock 'n roll gods still young at heart; running around and having a total blast on stage, performing to an audience in awe, is truly something magical that's much too sacred to put into words. So on that note, keep on rockin' AC/DC, I salute you!
Cattle Decapitation Wipes Out Edmonton on North American Extinction Tour - September 21, 2015
PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE
The Starlite Room was packed full of excited metal fans on Monday night, as death-grind kings, Cattle Decapitation, were visiting Edmonton on their North American Extinction Tour, promoting their newest record "The Anthropocene Extinction", and demolishing cities in their path.
Tampa, Florida's own, Dark Sermon, was first up to kick off the night. Delivering a ritualistic performance of blackened heavy metal, Dark Sermon left an impression on Edmonton that won't soon be forgotten. Up next was Black Crown Initiate, a personal favorite of mine, and despite being the odd band out on the bill due to their frequent (and lovely) clean harmonies between guitar and vocals, Black Crown Initiate always shows Edmonton what's up. Co-headlining the night was Australia's grindcore thunder from down under, King Parrot. It's always entertaining to see King Parrot live, the 5 piece from Melbourne, AUS. always put on a performance that's nothing short of wild! Warming up the crowd for what was yet to come, King Parrot had their Starlite Room audience all moshing, headbanging and stage-diving like crazy! It's always a pleasant sight to see people having so much fun at concerts, and this definitely a common thing whenever King Parrot is in town.
Lastly, our much anticipated headliner, Cattle Decapitation, took to a foggy and dimly lit stage as their first visit to Edmonton in 6 years. Appearing as silhouettes through the fog, the band immediately boomed into the first track off of their newest album "Manufactured Extinct" followed by "The Prophets of Loss". This resulted in the audience falling into a frenzy of aggressive moshing and break-neck headbanging, that stayed consistent for a majority of the set. Annihilating the remainder of their 12 song set, Cattle Decapitation fired on all cylinders with numerous tracks both old and new, all while maintaining their audible attack from start to finish, and leaving Edmonton with a sterling impression; Rejuvenating that of their previous performance, 6 years ago.
The Agonist Treats Union Hall to Audible Annihilation - September 19, 2015
PHOTOGRAPHED FOR AMPSANDGREENSCREENS.COM
Montreal's metal sensation, The Agonist, made a stop at Union Hall on Saturday night to kick ass and take names with new powerhouse femme-fatal frontwoman, Vicky Psarakis, leading the charge. Being a fan of The Agonist for many years, seeing them dominate the stage for the first time was so exciting for me.
Tearing into their set with "Thank You, Pain" and "Gates of Horn and Ivory", demonstrating the dynamic shreddery of Danny Marino and Pascal (Paco) Jobin, the audience immediately erupted into a whirlwind of headbanging hair and moshers, causing smiles to form on the faces of the band. Playing an adrenalized 9 song set, the Canadian 5-piece band was pleasantly received by their Edmonton crowd. Carrying on to play a handful of tracks both old and new to the tastes of long time fans, The Agonist thrashed and bashed their way through old fan favorites such as: "Panophobia", "The Tempest" and "Business Suits and Combat Boots", causing an uproar of break-neck headbanging to the thundering drumming of Simon McKay, and bubbling bass lines of Chris Kells.
With their in-your-face performance, The Agonist stole the show on Saturday night. Positive vibes were at an all time high, and the excitement in the air was contagious. Seeing a Canadian metal band doing so well while on tour makes me proud to be a (very small) part of the Canadian music scene, and inspires me to keep on keepin' on. I can't wait until The Agonist is back in town, because I know that they will not only dominate the stage, but totally blow the minds of everyone who goes to see them!
Display of Decay Demolishes DV8 Underground at "Dust of Existence" CD Release Party - September 18, 2015
One of Edmonton's top death metal extraordinaire's, Display of Decay, celebrated the release of their third self released album entitled "Dust of Existence" on Friday night at DV8 Underground. Metal fans from Edmonton and Calgary gathered in the small basement venue, anxious for what was about to unfold.
Kicking off their performance with the pounding rhythms of "Created to Kill", Display of Decay grabbed their audiences attention with deadly force. Between the screaming guitars of shredders Sean Watson and Jeremy Puffer, the band progressed on to fan favorite track, "Maggot Feast" - a track from their first EP entitled "Blood Borne". The crowd frequently erupted into a frenzy of moshers and headbangers which cracked smiles onto the stone-like faces of the band.
Kicking the set into high gear with the roaring rumbles of bassist, Jacob Maisonneuve, and the delectable double-kicks of drummer, Avery Desmarais, Display of Decay boomed and blasted into the remainder of their 10 song set. Playing numerous tracks from their newest release, along with a handful of others spanning their discography. Closing off their set with the title track of their new album "Dust of Existence", the gut-busting voice of vocalist, Jessy Leduc, could be heard from the street outside, causing people to chant and cheer for more.
With such a positive reaction from their audience, the band wasn't quite finished with their time on stage just yet. After a momentary regroup, Display of Decay said their farewells to their crowd with the earth shattering melodies of "Blood Borne", off of their second EP entitled "The Feasting", as an unexpected encore to put the cherry on top of a great and memorable evening for all.
SONiC BOOM Festival 2015
PHOTOGRAPHED FOR VANDALA MAGAZINE
Sonic Boom Festival is exactly what it sounds like; A gathering in the heart of Edmonton, featuring some of the sickest bands and artists in modern rock today, all coming together to create one loud, energetic, boomer of a festival! This was my first time shooting a music festival of this magnitude, and I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to be there. Despite the downer overcast and rainy weather, the bands totally rocked out and gave it their all, while hundreds of people, decked out in rain ponchos with umbrellas in hand, still flocked to Borden Park in Edmonton, Alberta on September 5th and 6th to check out what was in store over the weekend. With the announcement of the broken up hardcore-heavy weights, ALEXISONFIRE, reuniting for the summer, and as the event's main headliner, anticipation to see this band was thick throughout the weekend among festival goers.
Saturday September 5th - Day #1 of Sonic Boom fest consisted of a variety of interesting bands, all delivering nothing short of epic performances, leaving their fans screaming and begging for more. Kick off talent that took the stage for day one were as follows: Young Empires, Gay Nineties, K-OS, Robert DeLong, St.Lucia, Kongos, TV on the Radio, Brandon Flowers, Hozier, and headlined by the "folktronica" queen herself, Ellie Goulding. The energy of day one was coagulating throughout the park as day turned to night. Smiling faces could be seen in every direction, and positive vibes were all around; Seeing this, personally, made my time at the festival even more enjoyable. Feeling the passion and love for music abundant in the air sure makes me one happy gal.
Though missing out on getting shots of Brandon Flowers and Hozier due to the artists not wanting any photography during their performances, I managed to capture a few cool moments of the other artists on Saturday's bill.
Sunday September 6th - Day #2 of the festival hosted a stacked bill of bands that I couldn't wait to have in front of my lens. Kicking off the rainy day with The Zolas, as the perfect band to get the crowd of early-bird festival goers warmed up (both literally and figuratively) for what was in store. The day progressed on with the talented likes of: The Elwins, Eagles of Death Metal, Big Data, Rural Alberta Advantage, Tokyo Police Club, The Flaming Lips, Mother Mother, Tenacious D, and the much anticipated, ALEXISONFIRE, as our headliner for the evening. Though the rain showed no mercy to festival workers and attendees, everyone seemed to have high spirits. Smiles were still in abundance on the many faces of people bundled up in their best weather-proof attire. Despite how energetic and dynamic the bill was for day one of Sonic Boom, day two brought the heat. Countless colourful characters stormed the stage with an appetite for the resonance of rock through the stage amps and monitors. Intensity and power flooded the stage with each act as they boomed and bashed their way through their performances. The audience went wild with the confetti cannons that the Flaming Lips shot into the rainy air, while pushing out into the crowd, an enormous cluster of balloons that were taped together to spell out: "F*CK YEAH EDMONTON".
Upon nightfall, the crowd's restlessness was gaining in the atmosphere. Excitement was stirring, and boy, it was contagious! As a black, curtain-like backing stage banner fell to the ground, revealing a heart-skull logo, ALEXISONFIRE took to the dimly lit, red cast stage, greeted by hundreds of screaming fans. Despite the frigid fall air, the audience erupted into a frenzy of worm-rolling crowd surfers, and mosh-pit-maniacs; A pleasant sight for a temporarily reunited band, and heartwarming for a musician in general. The experience of headlining a renowned festival such as Sonic Boom, accompanied by the well received, purely passionate audience, who stayed tough all weekend long throughout the dreary weather, has to be something that the dudes of ALEXISONFIRE won't soon forget! Here's to more sweet reunion shows, see ya next year Sonic Boom!
Breakdowns for BreakFEST 2015
On August 22nd 2015, heavy metal fans of all ages flocked to the St. Albert Community Hall for the first installment of Breakdowns for Break-FEST, put on by the rock stars at Breakdowns for Breakfast, who are working non-stop to put on epic all-ages shows for everyone to enjoy. With Edmonton's delectable death metal heavy-weights, Death Toll Rising as the evening's headliner, volunteers generously catered to about 150 people while serving breakfast to attendees of the festival, making this a truly tasty event!
Saturday's stage was jam packed with excellence. The likes of: Sleeping in Traffic, Protosequence, Krepitus, Valyria and Great White Shark Fight, were pleasantly received by all in the room, each having a lively crowd, chanting and cheering for more. Not only was this the first festival put on by Breakdowns for Breakfast, it was also a goodbye to Great White Shark Fight. The St. Albert deathcore band has decided to go on hiatus under personal reasons, but being their last show, Great White Shark Fight shredded and boomed through their set, more aggressively than I have ever seen before. As the rhythms of their songs bled through the monitors for one last time, smiles and hugs were exchanged among band members and their nearby fans, making this a sentimental evening for all. Finally, as Death Toll Rising took the stage, the 10-year-strong, five-piece death metal masterpiece sliced and diced their way through their performance with precision and excellence. Playing a hefty amount of songs from their newest album "Infection Legacy", and surprising their audience with a new track, as well as some older songs, and one of my personal favorites, "Demon Rot".
It warms my heart to be a small part of events like Breakdowns for Break-FEST; Seeing smiling faces in the crowd and on stage all while happiness in general sits thick in the air, is a pleasant reminder of why I photograph concerts. The power of music and how it brings people together is unmatched! Here's to more sweet shows and smiling faces!
Camping Trip 2015
This past weekend a group of friends and I went on our annual camping trip to our super-secret camp-out spot, just outside of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. We spent the whole weekend there, and like every other year, made tons of memories, too. It was so refreshing to get out into nature and leave all of my cares behind, even if it was just for a few days. The smell of campfire, a group of great friends, and being in the mountains was so welcoming to me, I didn't want to leave!
Carting my side-kick Canon 6D around (naturally) I used the prime weather conditions and our location to my advantage for photos come nightfall. I've always been so fascinated by the night sky, and since we were in a spot that has very little light pollution to the point of faintly seeing the milky way with the naked eye, I grabbed the opportunity to try out astrophotography for the first time. After the first shot, I was hooked!
The next day, a few of us took a trip down to the North Saskatchewan River to hang out, do some fishing, and so our furry bulldog friend, Marley, could go for a swim. While we were there, I couldn't get over how blue and clear the water was! Dipping my toes in to feel the cool sensation of glacier water, I was tempted to hop in myself, but alas, taking pictures of the crystal waters seemed more important, and less chilly.
I couldn't wait for nightfall on Saturday night. The weather was warm, the sky was clear, and I was anxious to see the phenomenal light of the milky way, and trillions of stars flickering amidst the black oblivion of the night sky. I snapped photos of our dazzled sky and silhouetted-scenery for a few hours before the bright moon rose over the horizon, and managed to catch a few cool shots before then.
Check out more of my shots from this weekend below!
